Botox

Botox is an FDA approved product used for the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar creases or "frown lines," since 2002. Botox can also be used on other areas of the face and neck and can be used to treat hyperhidrosis. Dysport is a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has been used for more than twelve years but has only recently been FDA approved for the treatment of facial wrinkles.

Botox and Dysport both consist of the same basic ingredient, botulinum toxin A. When injected into facial muscles, both products provide similar results by blocking the release of a chemical that causes these facial muscles to contract, enabling them to relax and have a smoother appearance. Results will typically last 3-4 months and the effects are noticable within 4-10 days.

Studies do indicate more "spreading," of the product occurs with Dysport, which can increase the chance of having an eyelid droop, however this side effect should only be temporary. More units of Dysport are also needed to make the same facial corrections as Botox.
